This entire album is fun… almost too much fun. (It’s kind of an pop-electro-funk hybrid.) The sound is SUPER polished for a local act, and… I wouldn’t be surprised to see them get picked up by a major label sometime soon. The only thing I disliked is that the album ends with a ballad… such an upbeat, danceable (and again, fun) experience ending on a down note leaves a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

I’m kind of ashamed to admit, this is really my first real foray into the music of Erykah Badu. “New Amerykah” is seemingly equal parts warning and call to action (I especially liked the nod to ‘Network’), wrapped in a soul/funk coating. With a generous vein of hip-hop throughout. It compliments some of my latest reading material extremely well.
For everything that made “St. Elsewhere” the “it” album it was – “The Odd Couple” has none of that. As hard as they tried (or maybe didn’t try?), Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse have made an album that sounds like it contains all the B-Sides that didn’t make the cut for the first time around. The single, “Run,” is my favorite – the rest is all easily forgotten. Sad, as this could’ve been an epic follow-up.
